What counts as listening time?

Start with the one-way drive and the share of it likely to be spent listening. We subtract 15 minutes from that result. No recommended plan may run longer than the time left.

A six-hour drive at 75% listening produces 4 hours 30 minutes. The maximum book time is 4 hours 15 minutes. Playback-speed changes are not included.

The buffer is not scientific. It is a consistent allowance for ordinary interruptions and keeps a close match from becoming an overrun.

How ages are handled

A title remains eligible only when the checked age guidance includes both the youngest and oldest child entered. We do not average the ages or stretch a source beyond what it says.

Age guidance is editorial judgment, not a safety certification. Reading ability, prior knowledge and sensitivity vary.

What the suspense control means

Easygoing keeps the result to the lowest-intensity group in the catalog. Some danger or suspense allows moderate peril or sustained tension. Dark or scary is all right includes the full checked range.

This control is broad. The topic exclusions are sharper. A gentle story can still involve grief; a comic adventure can still involve violence.

How excluded topics work

When a selected topic appears in our catalog tags, that title is removed. Closely related tags are grouped: death, parent death and animal death, for example, all sit under Death or grief in the planner.

The tags are an original editorial screen, not a complete content database. An untagged title is not proof that the subject never appears. When a boundary is absolute, use the linked guidance before choosing.

Why sources have different jobs

One source rarely answers every question well. The edition or publisher page establishes the narrator and runtime. A librarian, family editor or professional audio review may support the audience and listening quality. Content guidance supplies warning detail.

We keep those roles separate. A retailer description is not independent proof that a book works across ages, and a print review is not evidence about a particular narrator.

How plans are ranked

Eligible titles are combined in groups of up to three. The ranking favors close use of the available time and the selected mood. It applies a small penalty to extra books because every new title adds a transition. Sequels are not recommended ahead of the first book.

The first card is the highest score, not a promise that it will be the family’s favorite. The timing and reason are shown so you can see why it ranked first.

What the planner does not know

• Whether a particular library has a title available today
• Whether a child will enjoy or tolerate a scene
• Traffic, stops, playback speed or a change of plans
• Every sensitive moment in every book
• Retailer prices, ratings or inventory

Library and commercial links

The library search appears first because borrowing is a normal way families listen. Retailer links do not change which books qualify or how they rank.
